Temporomandibular Disorder or TMD as it is more commonly known, is a painful condition. Sometimes referred to as “the great imposter” the character or nature of the discomfort or pain can be the same for many different conditions. It occurs when there are problems with the temporo-mandibular or jaw joint and the muscles attached to it. The most common cause is from subconscious clenching or grinding of the teeth. However, other common diagnoses that can cause TMD include underlying dental conditions leading to muscle pain, internal joint derangement, osteoarthritis or synovitis (inflammation of the lining membranes of the TMJ). Regardless of what causes the pain, obtaining the proper evaluation and treatment is vital and can only be made by a dental professional. Learn more in “TMD—Understanding the Great Imposter.”
